Painting and wall repair

Cracks, dents, plaster coming away or wall-plug holes: before painting, the repair has to be done properly. I assess the cause and condition of the wall, prepare it, smooth it where it makes sense and paint it with the finish each room calls for.

Wall with patches of sanded filler next to a white-painted brick wall.

What I do

  • Repairing non-structural cracks
  • Removing damaged or loose plaster and filling
  • Surface preparation: sanding, cleaning and priming
  • Skimming walls when their condition and the finish you want justify it
  • Advice on paint type, finish and colour
  • Protecting floors and furniture, and clean lines at corners and ceilings

Cause before coat.

  1. 1 · Understand

Why the wall is damaged: a knock, a movement crack, damp or old paint that won't hold.

  2. 2 · Repair

Clean back, fill, sand and, where it makes sense, skim. If the cause needs another professional, I tell you first.

  3. 3 · Paint

With the right paint for the room and as many coats as it takes for an even colour.

Process

How we go about it

  1. 01

    Look at the wall

I assess the type of damage, its likely cause and the condition of the plaster and the old paint.

  2. 02

    Suggest options

Patch repairs, skimming or just paint: I explain what makes sense and why.

  3. 03

    Prepare and repair

I protect the area, clean back, fill and sand. I show you the repaired wall before painting.

  4. 04

    Paint and check

Primer if needed, as many coats as it takes, and a check together in good light.

What affects the quote

Each quote is prepared for your situation. These are the factors that change it most; with photos and measurements I can give you a closer idea.

  1. Square metres of wall and ceiling, and height
  2. Condition of the surface and type of damage
  3. Whether it needs skimming or patch repairs are enough
  4. Type of paint and number of colours
  5. Furniture to move or protect, and access to the area

Questions about painting and walls

Not always. It depends on the condition of the wall and the finish you want. I'll explain the difference between patch repairs and skimming, so you can decide with the full picture.

The one that suits the room: a washable paint where there's more wear, and one suited to damp areas in a bathroom or kitchen. I'll show you options and we'll choose together.

I'll show you, explain what it means, and we'll agree how to proceed before carrying on.

Yes. If you're torn between a few, I'll help you compare them in the real light of your home, which changes a lot how a colour looks.
